Read full description of the books Licks of Love: Short Stories and a Sequel 'Rabbit Remembered':no other book i’ve read proves those famous lines more terrible or more true than the Rabbit series:
Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
you want to scream at these people to be nicer and have some perspective and see the big picture; that all the arguments and minor tragedies and betrayals and quibbles and pettiness are NOTHING if you take a few steps back… and then you realize that all that stuff is a big deal. that’s really much of what life is: not comprehending how other people can stand to engage in such petty bullshit and then going back to the petty bullshit of your own life. a proper understanding of this, maybe more than any other reason, is why updike could be considered a great writer.
well - it may sound like a forced poetic (and admittedly cliched) image, but, as i read this novella i kept returning to a picture of planet earth empty of all life: the wind screaming down vine-strewn city blocks, dust blowing up against abandoned houses in the american southwest, the great jungles and oceans and plains and prairies… just empty. no people. no animals. no life. gone. analytical maniac that i am, i’d usually spend the time trying to figure out what exactly my subconscious was trying to say here – and i kinda get it: in this novella, in these books, crushed with people and words and food and money and cars and houses, i understand why i was haunted with a big nothingness. but not totally. and filled with that feeling of 'life' that only the rarest fiction can give us, i kind of like it like that.
