Read full description of the books The Wright Brothers: The Dramatic Story-Behind-the-Story:4 shooting stars ... wonderful biography of Wilbur and Orville Wright!
The Wright Brothers is a detailed and well-researched book on the lives of Orville and Wilbur Wright who are credited with inventing, building, and successfully flying the first airplane! The persistence of these brothers was amazing!
Furthermore, I was impressed by the moral character of each of them and their lifelong commitment to family. Neither brother married, but they had strong bonds with each other and their sister, Katharine, in particular. Also, both of their parents. Unfortunately, their mother died when they were younger, but their father lived to be 88.
With that being said, the brothers were rather reclusive, hard-working, and didn't enjoy the limelight. They were focused on working -- first in the printing business and then in their bicycle shop. Although investors may have helped progress their work, they funded their own ventures.
I liked how the author told this story and appreciated the amount of research done to make this story come to life. On the other hand, the story dragged in some places and felt like it could have progressed a bit faster. As the brothers were admirable and not social, it may be that the personal parts just weren't as exciting as they may have been for other historical figures. The context beyond their stupendous accomplishments outweighs this in my opinion -- and I am so happy to read a book where there isn't much "dirty laundry".
One fact that I found interesting, was that Wilbur was struck in the face with a hockey stick in his late teens, while playing a game with friends. He had intended to attend college, but became withdrawn and more reclusive (becoming an avid reader!) after this severe injury. The attacker was a boy who went on to become a serial killer.
I recommend this to readers of non-fiction who are interested in the history of the airplane. It is an interesting book that showcases the invention and first successful flying of an airplane. The book is quite well-researched and the personal background on the brothers is interesting (although not colorful). I am anxious to read another book by David McCullough! I listened to the audio read by the author.
