This series is full of angst, drama, twists, secret plots, and one sided sexual activity. If you're into those kinds of things than I guess you would like this series. Trust me, this series is absolutely crazy. Even with all of those exciting elements, I found the series to be incredibly shallow and cliche. The plot was all your typical plots melted together in a big pot. Two friends of the opposite sex used to be childhood friends, amnesia affected one's memories, a relative is sick, someone is a prostitute, lead male is attractive, there are hints of yaoi, there's a submissive girl, kidnapping occurs, person seeks revenge, maids actually wear maid outfits, and there's popular and handsome and rich guy who can control everything with the snap of his fingers. I've seen these before. I don't not to see all of them at once.
Still, what I liked about the series was that it kept me on my toes. It was ne'er a dull moment. I always tried anticipating what would happen next. Although some of it was extremely predictable, there's still quite a bit that had enough mystey to keep me reading.
But the bad outweighs the good. The characters are extremely annoying, especially the two main characters. Shoei is manipulative, arrogant, and an all around jerk - but Mio loves him anyway! To the outsider he seems perfect. Rich, noble, good looking, smart, talented... Classic Mary Sue. It is said that Shoei loves Mio, but it all seems shallow. He hasn't spoken to her since they were kids, yet he likes her still. As sweet a that may sound, it just doesn't seem believable. I don't even remember half of the things that happened when I was in elementary school. As a conclusion, Mio is someone who Shoei is just lusting for. And she's completely submissive to him! All she does is let out a few "N-nooo's" which sounds amazingly sexy in Shoei's ears, only encouraging him to do more. For God sake's, call the police, kick him in the balls, scratch his eyes out, or all of the above! Harassment does not equal love. Yes, Mio was annoying as well. Her nature at times is admiring (when she's not ooh-ing or ahh-ing over Shoei) but she lacks depth. I can't connect with her very well.
My only favourite character has to be Hinata, Mio's "family" brother but Shoei's "blood" half-bother. His circumstances are extremely unusual, he's a bit off his rocker, and he's too clever for his own good, but he's more interesting than his siblings will ever be. I connected with him at times, mostly during his "Nobody wants me speech" (which seems to be fake in context, but could be very true). I was disappointed how at the end, Mio and Hinata and their "family" mother live together. It shouldn't be possible for Hinata and Mio to suddenly make up and be siblings again after Hinata wouldn't stop forcing himself on her. I wish things were resolved in a more believable way. Heck, it didn't even seem like it was resolved at all. Hinata just disappeared.
Oh, and the end. Well, long story short, everyone lives happily ever after. Mio goes to live on an island and Shoei takes a helicopter everyday to go to the same school as her and he visits her whenever he can. Yuck and double yuck. Everything goes along too smoothly. Nothing bugs me more than a perfect ending.
As a realist and a pessimist, this series was horrible. I couldn't take how everything was so perfect in the end. It was a good read, but I'm extremely disappointed in how the series was done.
