Van Gogh and Money: how 'poor' was Van Gogh actually? The Myth of Van Gogh as Poor Artist Debunked

Van Gogh and Money focuses on Vincent van Gogh's financial situation, a subject never thoroughly explored in a separate publication before. Known as the ultimate embodiment of the notion of the poor artist, Van Gogh was largely unable to sell his work. The letters between Vincent van Gogh and his brother Theo tell of an eternal lack of money, and the difficulties this created when it came to practising his art. But how impoverished was Van Gogh actually? Paint, canvases and models were not cheap. He was, however, more than happy to sacrifice his physical wellbeing in the interest of producing his masterpieces.

Van Gogh and Money - The Myth of the Poor Artist follows Van Gogh during two critical periods of his artistic career, his time spent in The Hague and Arles. At both stages, the artist was supported by his brother Theo, who sent him a monthly allowance that never seemed sufficient. This dependency on his brother caused immense guilt. From the Van Gogh letters (kept at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam) we get a good insight into Van Gogh's financial affairs, since the brothers’ correspondence often touched on the subject of money.

This publication presents a more nuanced view of Van Gogh as the impoverished artist, as he was in fact in a rather fortunate position compared to many of his peers. Regardless of the actual amount of money he received from his brother, it becomes clear that the artist was only poor in the light of his ambition. By reading this publication on Van Gogh and money, we hope that you will be able to better appreciate and understand Van Gogh’s work by shedding light on the man behind the iconic paintings.

Van Gogh and Money is number # 5 of the series Secrets of Van Gogh, written by Van Gogh scholar Liesbeth Heenk in a conversational manner without the use of art historical jargon.

Van Gogh in Love is about the story of the artist’s longing for love and a family, exploring the lesser-known area of the artist’s romantic life. As can perhaps be expected from an artist like Van Gogh, his choice of women was unconventional. He favored more mature companions, and pursued relationships with women that were considered unsuitable.

Van Gogh and Money focuses on the artist's financial situation, a subject never explored before. Regardless of the actual amount of money he received from his brother, it becomes clear that Van Gogh was poor in the light of his ambition.
