Read full description of the books Rubbing Shoulders in Yemen:If you have ever wanted to know, or even just thought about, what it might be like to spend time in a Middle East country, were your thoughts ever directed to Yemen as the country of choice? Perhaps not, yet in 1987 that is where the author of “Rubbing Shoulders in Yemen”, Peter Twele found himself in a quest to conduct sociolinguistic research (the study of how the use of language affects society).
Covering a period of just four months, Peter relates in fascinating detail his travels and his adventures with the people he met in what, at that time was North Yemen. As he sets out to gather data for his research, Peter entered into a land quite foreign to him and encountered local people to whom he appeared very foreign as well, and we are treated to accounts of how the people of the various localities in the land reacted to his presence and how they, in most instances, welcomed this stranger into their homes and their lives and provided him with an experience of a lifetime.
In Peter’s words, “Not everyone opened up to me by any means, but there were always those who did … and I really can’t blame those who didn’t. I mean, it was rather strange for them to encounter this person from Canada (wherever that was) who unexpectedly showed up in their villages … often in small remote villages where no Westerner had ever set foot before. I interrupted their schedules, and they usually didn’t mind. Many of them actually seemed to enjoy my company, even if it was often nothing more than mere curiosity on their part … and maybe it was also a means of providing them with a new form of entertainment or an opportunity to meet a real Westerner.”
I highly recommend reading Pete’s book. It is suitable for all ages although I would guess best comprehended by young teens through to adults.
Read information about the authorPeter Twele first moved to the Middle East in 1984, where he resided and traveled extensively for over 11 years. After studying Arabic for a number of years, he then worked and did research through a number of institutions in the Middle East, including the Phonetics Research Center at the University of Jordan, the American Center of Oriental Research, the American Institute for Yemeni Studies, and the Yemen Centre for Research and Studies. He has also taught in the Linguistics programs at both Trinity Western University in Langley, BC, and at the University of Texas in Arlington. To this day he continues with his desire to build bridges of understanding between the West and the Middle East ... mostly by trying to help Westerners understand and appreciate Middle East cultures.
