Read full description of the books Shaman King, Vol. 1: A Shaman in Tokyo:

I still believe no one could understand my love for Shaman King or have I not found the right place to fangirl about it yet. This series is just as old as me, born in 1998! I have never tried to read the manga before, it is my first manga ever and I wasn't disappointed. I finished it so fast and I loved it. I could still feel the tension in Yoh vs. Ren's fight, even if I already watched the anime several times and knew what was going to happen. Yoh's victory over Ren's is the end of volume 1. There are a few differences from the anime and also, a few events happened differently.
First of all, Morty's name is Manta which is still a bit odd. Then the story of Ryu's gang is a bit simplified I think. If I remember correctly, there were two fights between Yoh and Ren but in the manga they're synthesized as one. There is also another kind of story about the evil spirit that I supposed was at the old gym in the anime, the spirit that possessed Ryu but there is no other mention of Ryu in this book. There is also no mention of ghost friends of Yoh helping him in school in the anime. I also believe that Mosuke and Amidamaru met in the anime, but not in the manga. Another difference is Yoh rescuing the children from a burning building, which never appeared in the anime. And the last one, I guess, is the appearance of the boxer whose mentor died but Yoh brought him back to help the next gusshi. I enjoyed this book but it was so short and now I'm craving for more Shaman King action!
