"A thoroughly absorbing read for 12-year-olds, who can engage as much or as little as they like with the historical detail and lessons in time, while getting swept along in the adventures and fates of Julius, our likeable hero, and his slowly evolving band of friends."—The Big Issue
It's 1838 and London is gripped by orchid fever. When Charles Darwin's diary turns up at Higgins's bookshop, it's closely followed by two ex-bodysnatchers. And a fellow so menacing that he seems to make the room cold when he enters. Why do they want the diary so badly? Could it have something to do with the painting of an orchid it contains?
Before he knows it Julius is spinning through time and parallel realms in a race to rid London of the soulcatcher and a future too horrible to imagine.
Tim Hehir is an author of short stories and plays. His debut novel was Julius and the Watchmaker. Hehir is based in Melbourne, Australia.
Read information about the authorI was born at an early age in Abingdon, England. At 5 years old my family moved to the Dublin suburb of Portmarnock, a brand new housing estate by the sea. When I reached adulthood I travelled through various countries looking for and usually finding work. Since moving to Australia in 1995 and have continued to do a variety of jobs.
I have been interested in reading and writing for as long as I can recall and have written short stories and short plays. My proudest achievement apart from Julius and the Watchmaker is my short play Pride and Prejudice in 10 Minutes Flat. It is just as the title suggests and has been performed around the world.
